Worn e-scooter brake pads: 4 signs you can't miss

After years of taking apart electric scooter brakes in the workshop, you learn to spot wear at a glance — or rather, at the first sound. Here are the 4 signs you can't miss.

1. A squeal or metallic grinding when braking

This is often the very first sign. Once the pad's friction lining has worn away, the metal backing plate rubs directly against the disc — hence that sharp, unpleasant noise.

2. The brakes feel soft or spongy

Do you have to squeeze the lever harder than before to get the same result? That's a sign the pad is no longer gripping the disc properly.

3. Stopping distances get longer

If your scooter clearly takes more time or distance to stop than a few months ago, don't put it down to habit — it's very often the pads.

4. The lever travels further than before

On cable-operated mechanical brakes, a lever that comes closer to the handlebar before it bites is a classic sign of wear or misadjustment.

A quick visual check

If you can see into the caliper, check the thickness of the remaining lining: below 1–2 mm, it's time to replace the pads.

Pads to replace? You'll find replacement brake pads for most models (resin, semi-metallic or metallic) in our shop.

It's not always the pads

Weak braking can also come from a slack cable, a warped disc or — on models with electronic brakes — a sensor issue. Check our error codes page if your scooter also shows an error message.
